J-1 physicians type 2

Foreign physicians may also enter the U.S. using a J-1 visa if they are coming to teach, conduct research, or observe. In this situation, they may be sponsored by the ECFMG or by a sponsoring medical institution like UCLA and will be issued the J-1 IAP-66 paperwork from the institutions.

Physicians who will have incidental patient care will need to have an attestation from the dean of the medical school. That document must have the following attestations:

  1. The foreign physician’s patient contact will be incidental;

  2. The program basically involves observation, teaching, or research;

  3. A fully licensed supervisor will oversee the physician’s patient contact;

  4. The foreign physician will not bear the ultimate responsibility for the patient’s care;

  5. The physician’s activities are in compliance with state licensing requirements and regulations;

  6. Experience gained by the physician cannot be counted as clinical credit.

Physicians who participate in research are not necessarily subject to the two year residency requirement and are not subject to the licensing and credentialing requirements imposed on those who do have patient care.

Physicians under this category are permitted to stay in the U.S. for up to three years. Thereafter, they will have to change to a different visa status or return to the country of last residence if they are subject to the two year residency requirement.
